Expanding Your Network Once your network has been set up, here are some other ways to expand your network.
Think of a switch as a surge protector. Using a surge protector in your home allows you to power up multiple devices from a single electrical outlet. The same concept applies to a switch, except a switch is for network connectivity. A switch, such as D-Link's the DGS-2208, increases the number of Ethernet ports available for your network devices. Adding a switch allows you to add additional wired network devices for network access and for sharing an Internet connection.
An Access Point (AP) enables you to add wireless products to your wired network. Attach one to your wired router and enable wireless connectivity throughout your home. Use a Wireless Access Point to avoid the hassle and mess of installing Ethernet cables throughout your home.
Powerline devices utilize your home's electrical wiring to create or expand a network. By attaching one from your router into your power outlet, you can turn every other power outlet into a possible network connection. Connect multiple devices in the farthest corners of your home by attaching a switch or an access point to a Powerline unit.
By adding a print server (such as D-Link's DPR-1260), you can connect your printer to the network rather than trying to print through a dedicated PC. Having a printer connected to a print server alleviates the need run a software print server. Now, compatible computers can share a single printer and send print requests from anywhere on your network – either wired or wirelessly.
Need more coverage? A wireless range extender or repeater is a great tool to increase the coverage area of your wireless network. Range extenders can be essential for making your wireless network reach additional areas such as a backyard or garage.
A wireless bridge converts your wired Ethernet-enabled device into a wireless device. Perfect for media set-top boxes or video game consoles, wireless bridges are an excellent addition to any wireless network. Reduce the clutter of network wires by using a wireless bridge. |
