What is "IP"? So now you know about the different types of network that can be created and how the 7 Layer OSI Model make up a set of rules that help computers on a network talk to each other. In this section, we will help you understand how computers in a network communicate with each other within a LAN and WAN. The most common method of communication over a network is via Internet Protocol (IP). IP stands for Internet Protocol. This is the communication method your computer uses to transfer information over the Internet (i.e. Surfing the Web, checking/sending e-mail, instant messaging, streaming online music and video).
